ADA ROVATTI
is one of the fastest rising young jazz saxophonists on the scene today. Her mastery of tenor and soprano
saxophones takes center stage in each of her two current bands, Green Factor and The Ada Rovatti Quartet.
Ada has arrived.
Green Factor‘s
melting pot of jazz, Celtic, groove, and fusion elements is full of cleverly
twisted, adventurous, and intriguing musical choices that demonstrate Ada’s
talents as a composer and arranger. Green Factor matches Ada with an unusual
instrumentation including the Uilleann bagpipes and pennywhistles of Ivan Goff,
and the violin (both electrified and acoustic) of the great Christian
Howes. Pianist Oli Rockberger
contributes occasional vocals, and electric bassist Janek Gwizdala and drummer
Lionel Cordew anchor the group. Their new CD, Green Factor (Piloo Records) quickly entered the top 50 for U.S.
jazz radio airplay, and has received glowing reviews.
“The novel blend of
Celtic, straight-ahead and funk of Green Factor is an immediately accessible
and engaging set of sounds, one that holds up to, and demands, repeated spins,”
wrote Dan McClenaghan in All About Jazz.
JazzImprov noted that “(Rovatti) taps
the Celtic songbook the way jazz musicians have done with the American
equivalent for a century: her breezy, green melodies are subjected to all
manner of dissection, be it with a pop-, funk- or avant-garde-tempered blade.”
The Ada Rovatti Quartet is a more traditional jazz setting that allows Ada
to showcase her straight-ahead, swinging improvisations, her work as a composer,
and her enduring love of jazz standards from many eras. Her CD releases have included jazz
giants such as Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Mike Stern, and Don Alias. Ada’s newest CD in this more mainstream
jazz environment is Airbop (Kindred
Rhythm Records.)
Ada’s recording credits
also include the Grammy-winning Randy Brecker CD, 34th ‘N Lex (Best Contemporary Jazz Album), and
Mahavishnu Orchestra guitarist John McLaughlin’s Industrial Zen.
